golden rule

The term used since the Reformation for the words of Jesus recorded in Matt. 7:12 as being of great value; ‘in everything do to others as you would have them do to you’ to express the obligation of love to both God and neighbour. There is a similar connection in the Didache. It is also found occasionally in Jewish writings, but more commonly in a negative form: ‘What is hateful to you, do not do to anyone else’; it also occurs in the words of the rabbi Hillel (60 BCE–20 CE) and in Tobit (4:15) and also in Buddhist and Islamic literature.
